The befriending scheme aims to increase the leisure and independence skills of young people with autism.
As young people with autism grow older, it becomes less appropriate for them to go everywhere with their parents. They need to mix with people their own age and go out to the pictures, swimming pool, bowling, or to the pub (if they are old enough!)
People with autism do not understand how to behave in social situations. A befriender is carefully chosen to become a friend, to act as a role model and to accompany him/her on various outings and activities. This will help the young person learn the appropriate behaviour patterns, and to generally become increasingly more independent.
A befriender needs to be responsible & reliable and have free time regularly, as people with autism generally prefer order and routine.
The Sitting Scheme
The D.A.S.G. provides a Sitting Service, which gives a much-needed break for the parents/carers of the person with a Autism Spectrum Condition. Having a child or young person with autism affects not only the parents, but also any brothers or sisters who may often feel that their needs always come second. It may be that the parents never manage to go out together, as they feel unable to leave their chid with a sitter as parents of other children might do.
The sitting service provided by the D.A.S.G. enables parents/carers to have some regular time to themselves or to spend with their partners and other children. They mal well be exhausted, and this small break from caring helps them to recharge their batteries, strengthening their ability to cope.
We are looking for volunteers to help us continue both these services, allowing the parents and carers of people with autism the chance to enjoy pastimes many people take for granted.
